Banstead Karate Club

Martin Hardy and David Frost created the club in 1982. Martin also formed the Banstead Judo Club and David the Banstead Iaido Club.

David Frost 5th Dan Karate, runs the Karate Club assisted by Bill Wheeler 3rd Dan, who created and is responsible for this site.

Over the years many people have trained under David's guidance and have gone on to run clubs of their own. Namely, Dorking Karate Club, Tim Wilson 3rd Dan, Keith Allen 3rd Dan Rye Club, Kevin Sliney 3rd Dan Teignmouth Club, Sean McCrossen Kingswood. Surrey.

Banstead Club has trained people from many different walks of life and abilities, who have found a great spirit of friendship and a profound difference to their quality of life.

Kyushindo Karate

Kyushindo Karate has many sites now on the internet, which are well worth researching to realise how wide the spread of the Kyushindo style and philosophy relating to Karate and Judo. We have close affiliations with several more Clubs namely Highgate Club www.kyushindokarate.com where we grade for Black Belt and Dan grades. Oxford area clubs www.kyushindo.info and Enfield www.geocities.com/johnlaceysmith. Another site I would mention is www.kyushindo.org.uk run by Paul Chaplehow (Formerly Brown) at Romsey, who was trained by David and set up one of the first Kyushindo internet sites.

David and I would be very interested to here, via e mail, from all past and present members of the club etc, let us know how you are getting on.

BRIEF HISTORY OF KARATE AND KYUSHINDO

Karate - Chinese hand or empty hand

Kara: Chinese     Te: Hand

The origins of Karate can be traced from about AD520 when Bodhidharma, an Indian, travelled from his country and settled at a Shoalin Monastery in China and guided students in the art of Zen Buddhism and a series of physical and mental exercises. He gained a reputation in China as a formidable exponent of what became known as Ch’uan Fa ( Fist Way ) now known as Kung Fu.

Over a period of time this style fused with other Chinese fighting techniques developed over some 1000 years. Chinese monks continued to use it to defend themselves from bandits.

Okinawa.

It is the main Island of the Ryku chain of Islands in Japan. Shaolin fighting techniques and other elements of Chinese culture filtered into Okinawa over centuries and a fusion of styles occurred.

In 1868 Gichin Funakoshi was born in Edo which became Tokyo, he is credited with having given shape and structure to relatively ill defined techniques of karate and named his style Shotokan, the name being taken from his pen name Shoto. He is recognised as the father of modern Karate-do.

Kenshiro Abbe founded the Kyushindo movement in 1956 in the UK. An exceptional man, see www.wikipedia.org for his profile. George Mayo trained under Sensei Abbe and furthered the Kyushindo movement for many years.

On Sunday 22nd April 07 the Banstead Club played host to senior Dan grades to agree the workings of various Katas. I have recorded them and they will be distributed to the various club leaders in due course. This will allow uniformity of Kata in training and various gradings in the future.

Over the years various interpretations have been allowed to develop and 6 Kata had disappeared from some clubs. Apparently we have 7 and 8 to look forward to, the black belt gradings will be getting longer and longer!

DEATH OF JOHN MULLEN

It is with very great sadness I have to announce the death of John, he died the morning of 12th May, he fought very hard against cancer. His wife Sheila was an inspiration and did all she could in a very difficult situation.

John, was a truly nice man, very easy to get on with and Kipling's poem IF, applied to John, which I think is about the highest compliment a person can get. Never forgotten by his friends.

Just prior to the summer we had a meeting at Banstead of many high Dan grades to agree and alter some of the Kyushindo Katas and also to learn Kata 6, which some of the clubs have little or no knowledge, which included us at Banstead.

On Saturday 1.9.07 at Dorking Kyushindo Club, Sensei Tim Parker organised a seminar for high grades. Sensei Iain Abernethy 6th Dan, one of the UK's most respected Combat and Kata exponents gave us a very good days instruction. His site has got to be one of the best martial art sites. www.iainabernethey.com , very informative.
